Why We Can't Give You an Exact Price Over the Phone

It's the first thing almost everyone asks, and it's completely fair: "roughly what will this cost?" We'll always tell you our pricing ranges honestly — but an exact number for your specific device, over the phone or by email, is something no honest lab can actually give you. Here's why, and why the free evaluation exists precisely to solve it.

We're not being evasive when we can't give you a firm price on the phone — we're being honest. Data recovery isn't priced like an oil change, where the service is the same every time. It's priced by what actually failed, and the same outward symptom can hide completely different failures with completely different costs. A number given before anyone has looked at your device isn't a quote; it's a guess dressed up as one. Here's what genuinely determines the price, and why a real evaluation is the only way to pin it down.

The failure sets the price — not the device

Two identical hard drives can cost wildly different amounts to recover, because price tracks the type of failure, not the make or model. Our pricing page lays this out in full, but the short version:

When you call, you can tell us the symptom — "it's clicking," "it won't show up," "it's completely dead." What you can't tell us is which underlying failure is causing it, and that's the part that sets the price.

What you see isn't what we see

This is the heart of it. The symptom you can describe from home maps to many possible failures, not one:

Quoting from the symptom alone means quoting for all of those failures at once. A lab that gives you a confident number anyway is either lowballing to get your device in the door — the classic bait-and-switch — or padding the price to a worst case. Neither is a real quote.

The honest test: if a company gives you a firm price before seeing your device, ask yourself how they could possibly know the failure without diagnosing it. They can't — which means the number will change, or it was never accurate to begin with.

The same drive behaves differently on our tools

Here's a part most people never see. A drive doesn't behave the same way on your laptop as it does on professional recovery hardware, so the "diagnosis" you can do at home and the one we do in the lab often don't match:

In other words, the professional evaluation doesn't just confirm what you already suspected — it frequently changes the picture in one direction or the other. That's exactly why it can't be skipped, and why it's the fairest thing for you: the quote is based on how your drive actually behaves on the tools that will do the recovery, not on how it behaved on a machine that was never built for it. It's the same reason professional recovery differs so much from consumer software.

What the free evaluation actually does

The evaluation exists to answer the exact question you're asking — "what will this cost?" — accurately instead of approximately. When your device reaches us, we:

  1. Diagnose it on professional hardware to identify the actual failure, not just the symptom.
  2. Determine what the recovery will genuinely involve — the methods, the parts, the time.
  3. Give you a firm, no-obligation quote before any chargeable work begins.
  4. Do nothing chargeable until you approve that quote — and if we can't recover your data, you owe no recovery fee.

All of it is free, and none of it commits you to anything. You can approve the quote, or take your device back — the choice is yours once you have real information instead of a phone estimate.

Why our tools and experience give you the best quote

The reason to get that evaluation from an established lab isn't just the tooling — it's what the tooling plus experience lets us see. Professional imaging systems, a cleanroom, and firmware-level equipment reveal the true state of a drive that no consumer setup can. And years of seeing these failures across thousands of devices means we recognize what we're looking at quickly and price it accurately — neither inflating it to cover uncertainty nor underquoting to win the job and surprising you later. An accurate quote protects you as much as it does us. It's also why we're honest that recovery isn't always possible; you can read more in the real problems with data recovery, and about how our process works from drop-off to return.

So when we ask you to bring the device in or ship it for a free evaluation rather than quoting blind, it isn't a runaround — it's the only way to give you a number you can actually trust. Serving the Valley and all of Arizona from our Phoenix-area lab, with secure mail-in from anywhere.

Data recovery pricing & evaluations — FAQ

Can you give me a rough price over the phone?
We can walk you through our flat-rate pricing and the general ranges for different failure types, so you're never in the dark about what recovery tends to cost. What we can't responsibly do is give you a firm number for your device before we've seen it, because the price is set by the specific failure — and the failure often isn't what the symptom suggests. That's exactly why the evaluation is free: it's how you get a real quote instead of a guess.
Why do I have to send my device in just to get a price?
Because the price depends on what actually failed, and that can only be determined by diagnosing the device on professional tools. A drive that won't show up on your computer might have a simple board fault, a firmware problem, or failing heads — three very different jobs at three very different prices. Only a real evaluation tells us (and you) which one you're dealing with.
Will the price go up after the evaluation?
No — it works the opposite way. The evaluation is how we arrive at the firm quote in the first place, and nothing chargeable happens until you see that quote and approve it. We're not in the business of quoting low to get your device in the door and then raising the price once we have it; that "bait and switch" is one of the things we warn people about when they're choosing a lab. The number you approve is the number.
Is the evaluation actually free?
Yes. We diagnose your device and give you a firm, no-obligation quote at no cost, and we work on a strict "No Data, No Recovery Fee" basis — if we can't recover your data, you don't pay a recovery fee. (Drives that arrive already opened by someone else, or physically destroyed, can carry an attempt fee; we'll always tell you upfront if that applies.)
My drive is completely dead — can't you price it from that?
"Completely dead" is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and it's one of the broadest there is. A drive that appears totally dead could be a failed power component on the board (often one of the more affordable fixes), a seized motor, failed heads needing cleanroom work, or a controller fault. Each has a very different price. The only way to tell them apart — and to quote honestly — is to put it on the bench.
