It is NVMe, not a faster SD card
CFexpress Type B is a small NVMe SSD: NAND, a real SSD controller, PCIe. The camera talks to it the way a laptop talks to an M.2 stick. When it is healthy, that is why it is fast enough for high-bitrate video. When it is not, the failure looks like every other NVMe failure we already cover — the controller stops enumerating, the host shows 0 bytes or “format this disk,” and consumer software has nothing to scan.
A USB CFexpress reader does not change that. If the controller is not answering, the reader is just another PCIe-to-USB bridge in front of a dead SSD. Swapping readers, trying a second camera, or running Recuva is the same mistake as sticking a dead laptop NVMe in a USB enclosure and hoping the files appear. Why the SD playbook makes it worse
The format prompt on a CFexpress card is the same sentence you see on SD. The consequence of clicking it is not. Formatting an SD card overwrites a file-system index. Formatting or firmware-updating a CFexpress card that is already in a controller panic can rewrite the service area of an SSD. That is how intact NAND becomes a research problem.
Do not:
- Click Format, even once, to “see if it comes back”
- Run the manufacturer's firmware updater on a card that will not enumerate
- Keep power-cycling it through different readers and bodies
- Assume chip-off like a cheap SD card will just work. Modern NVMe is usually hardware-encrypted to that controller. Chip-off without the original controller is often ciphertext. We will tell you which case you have after we look. We will not pretend every camera card is a Rusolut job.

What we can say honestly
We recover SD and CompactFlash, including cards whose controllers have failed, by reading the NAND when that path still works — including Rusolut chip-off on SD/CF. We recover NVMe SSDs when the original controller can be brought back far enough to decrypt and image. CFexpress sits on the NVMe side of that line. If the card still mounts intermittently, stop. Same rule as a dying SSD: every extra session is more controller time you do not get back.

What to do right now
- Take the card out of the camera. Do not shoot another frame onto it.
- Do not format it. Do not firmware-update it. Do not keep swapping readers.
- If it is not enumerating on a known-good reader, leave it powered down.
