CFexpress Isn't an SD Card

Your Canon, Nikon, or Sony says the card is empty, 0 bytes, or wants a format. Recuva and the USB reader do nothing. That is not a stubborn SD card. CFexpress Type B is an NVMe SSD in a camera slot, and software that scans SD cards cannot talk to a controller that is not enumerating.

We already wrote about the SD-card format prompt and about CF/SD wear. Those posts are still right for SD and CompactFlash. CFexpress is a different protocol. That is what cameras are dying on now.

It is NVMe, not a faster SD card

CFexpress Type B is a small NVMe SSD: NAND, a real SSD controller, PCIe. The camera talks to it the way a laptop talks to an M.2 stick. When it is healthy, that is why it is fast enough for high-bitrate video. When it is not, the failure looks like every other NVMe failure we already cover — the controller stops enumerating, the host shows 0 bytes or “format this disk,” and consumer software has nothing to scan.

A USB CFexpress reader does not change that. If the controller is not answering, the reader is just another PCIe-to-USB bridge in front of a dead SSD. Swapping readers, trying a second camera, or running Recuva is the same mistake as sticking a dead laptop NVMe in a USB enclosure and hoping the files appear. Why the SD playbook makes it worse

The format prompt on a CFexpress card is the same sentence you see on SD. The consequence of clicking it is not. Formatting an SD card overwrites a file-system index. Formatting or firmware-updating a CFexpress card that is already in a controller panic can rewrite the service area of an SSD. That is how intact NAND becomes a research problem.

What we can say honestly

We recover SD and CompactFlash, including cards whose controllers have failed, by reading the NAND when that path still works — including Rusolut chip-off on SD/CF. We recover NVMe SSDs when the original controller can be brought back far enough to decrypt and image. CFexpress sits on the NVMe side of that line. If the card still mounts intermittently, stop. Same rule as a dying SSD: every extra session is more controller time you do not get back.

  1. Take the card out of the camera. Do not shoot another frame onto it.
  2. Do not format it. Do not firmware-update it. Do not keep swapping readers.
  3. If it is not enumerating on a known-good reader, leave it powered down.

CFexpress FAQ

Is CFexpress just a fast SD card?
No. Type B is NVMe. The camera is talking to an SSD controller over PCIe, not an SD host. Tools built for SD do not see a drive that is not enumerating.
The camera says format. Should I?
No. It is the same prompt an SD card shows, but a different kind of device underneath. Formatting or firmware-updating a card that is already in a controller panic can turn a recoverable SSD into ciphertext or a dead service area.
Will a different USB reader fix it?
Only if the first reader was the actual fault. If the card will not enumerate on a second known-good reader and will not mount in a second body, the controller is the problem. More adapters will not invent a working FTL.
Can you chip-off a CFexpress card like an SD card?
Sometimes the NAND can be read. On modern NVMe the data is often encrypted to the original controller, so chip-off without that controller is not a given. We recover SD/CF that way when it applies, and NVMe when the controller can be revived. Evaluation is how we tell which one you have. We will not promise chip-off up front.
