What came in
An Intel Optane Memory H10 — an unusual M.2 NVMe module that combines two different storage technologies on a single stick: a small amount of fast Intel Optane memory alongside a larger QLC NAND flash area. It had failed and stopped presenting the client's data.
What we found
Because the H10 is really two storage devices sharing one board, we assessed each independently. The QLC NAND portion — the bulk storage — was not recoverable. The Optane portion, however, was still readable, and it held enough of what the client actually needed to be worth pursuing.
What we did
We imaged the accessible Optane portion of the module, decrypted it, and rebuilt the file system from that image so the data could be interpreted. From there we were able to recover a large majority of the files the client specifically needed. We were transparent that the QLC NAND side was gone, so the client knew exactly what was and wasn't coming back.
Outcome
Partial recovery.
The H10 is a genuinely awkward device to recover because it is two things at once — Optane and QLC NAND — and a failure can take one, the other, or both. This is also a good example of an honest partial: rather than overstate what was possible, we recovered what we could from the surviving Optane side and were clear about the NAND loss.
